SUMMER TERM STEM COMPETITION
DESIGN A RACE BOAT
Explore materials, forces and sustainability by challenging your class to design a boat to win the America’s Cup in 2019!
The winner(s) will bring their class on a visit to the Tech Deck & Education Centre at the Land Rover BAR team base in Portsmouth, including a unique opportunity to meet one of the Land Rover BAR designers, an on the water sailing session PLUS a tablet computer for the teacher.
Capture the imagination of your class by relating exciting STEM learning resources to the 35th America’s Cup, starting on 26th May in Bermuda!
How to enter
We’re asking students aged 11-14 to come up with their own design for a boat for the Land Rover BAR sailors in the next America’s Cup. They need to show us they have thought about the science and engineering behind their choices, considered recycling of materials and made sustainable selections wherever possible.
Submissions can be hand drawn or computer generated using CAD. Supporting information should consider:
- The type of boat (e.g. the shape)
- The structure (e.g. aero, hydrodynamics)
- The materials (e.g. light, waterproof, sustainable)
For more information on how to enter by 30th June 2017, download the Design a Race Boat teacher and student guides below.
You can choose to run this challenge with your class as part of your current teaching or within a STEM club, and you can link it to existing BT STEM Crew modules.
BT STEM Crew films, interactive quizzes and worksheets to introduce Land Rover BAR to your students and to support their learning. Materials and their uses explores the materials of the current Land Rover BAR boat and uniform. A key consideration in design is how this will work in the elements – when the boat is on the water, the sailors need to power it themselves and work with, and sometimes against, the elements. To help students think about this, you could explore Energy stores and transfers and Mechanisms.
Sustainability is a core principle for Land Rover BAR, from the day-to-day running of the base to the materials they choose for the boat. You can set the scene with the Sport and sustainability module to find out what the team are doing to help the environment.
The challenge also looks at scientific thinking and problem solving.
Submit your entries by 30th June 2017 to be in with a chance of winning these prizes!
